Our History

Since 1925, The Stemler Family has been providing mechanical contracting services to the Southern Indiana and Louisville area.

1925

Like so many businesses, the Stemler Corporation has humble origins, starting small, with Frank Stemler, Sr., working out of his Jeffersonville home.

His school bus driver day job allowed him to drop students off at school, remove the seats and use the bus to perform plumbing service calls around town. In the afternoon, he’d re-install the seats and deliver the children home.

Frank Jr. and his brother Ralph were born during the Great Depression. They grew up in the business, working for their father.

1925

1940

As America was coming out of the Depression, extended family employees came on board, including Hourston Eggenspieler, Frank’s brother-in-law from Utica.

1940

1945

Frank Jr. takes the reins as president from his father, with Ralph serving as Vice President of Stemler Plumbing.

1947

Stemler Plumbing moves into a brand new building at 812 E. 10th Street in Jeffersonville. Today, the residential plumbing division continues to operate out of that same location.

1947

1950

Frank and Ralph expanded the business by adding a retail plumbing parts shop. They claimed it was “the most extensive inventory of parts in the Falls City area.” We cannot doubt that it was!

1950

1961

Betty Stemler, Frank Jr’s wife, joins the family enterprise, serving as secretary and treasurer.

1961

1976

Steve Stemler, Ralph’s oldest son, starts working part-time in the business.

Betty steps down, and Carolyn Stemler, Ralph’s wife, assumes the secretary and treasurer responsibilities.

1976

1981

By now, Steve and Richard Stemler – third-generation plumbers – have joined the business full-time. They introduced computer technology, expanded the service area, and added 24-hour emergency service. More employees were added as Stemler Plumbing expanded into commercial and industrial plumbing, serving Indiana and Kentucky.

1981

1989

Steve steps into the role of president, and Richard vice president.

1989

1999

The company secures a two-acre site just a half block from the retail operation. This will accommodate further expansion, including Stemler Irrigation, as commercial and residential irrigation demand grows.

1999

2006

Under Steve Stemler’s continued guidance, the Stemler Corporation expands further into commercial and industrial plumbing, providing services to local and national general contractors.
